He dueled another famous swordsman named Sasaki Kojiro in 1612. Miyamoto Musashi was a Ronin and an expert swordsman, who lived in the late 1500s. One of the main design inspirations for both characters comes from the story of the duel between two real life swordsmen in Japan. Sephiroth was planned to be suffering from Mako addiction and the cause of his madness was the crippling withdrawals that he suffered from the substance.
